Welcome to the Stuttgart Region

Welcome to one of the world’s most productive regions: approximately 160,000 companies and 1.4 million employees generate 100 billion euros here every year. Stuttgart and the surrounding area form a versatile and energetic region that unites different facets of business and culture.

This is probably the reason why visions and economic goals are being tackled somewhat more purposefully here. The region has the highest number of exports in Germany. It holds the top position nationwide in innovation and research and is one of the leading locations in Europe for industries of the future.

INNOVATION

Pillar of the German economy

The Stuttgart region is a key European business location. World market leaders such as Daimler, Porsche, Bosch, IBM and Hewlett Packard are based here alongside medium-sized innovation drivers that form the mainstay of a global economy and give it indispensable impetus. In recent decades, renowned auditing and consulting firms as well as financial and creative enterprises have settled in this agile and expanding environment.

Details

With over 50 % of all employees in knowledge-intensive branches of industry, the Swabian metropolis occupies the top position in Germany. Highly qualified university graduates ensure a high density of skilled workers and make Stuttgart one of the most innovative locations for companies.

With two Max Planck Institutes, five Fraunhofer Institutes, six research institutes of the German Aerospace Center and numerous private institutions, the outlook for the future is optimistic. In the first half of 2017, Baden Württemberg's total economic output rose by 2.1 percent.

In the countries of the European Union, the business sector accounts for the lion's share of research and development expenditure. In 2015, investments in research and development (R&D) amounted to 69 % in the German business sector and 64 % in the EU. In Baden Württemberg, this share is even higher at 81 %.*

Cultural metropolis with an excellent offer

In the latest HWWI / Berenberg Culture City ranking, Stuttgart was once again named the German Capital of Culture No. 1 in 2016.

The multi-faceted offer is appreciated and enjoyed far beyond Stuttgart. And the persistently high demand even makes the cultural sector an economic pillar of the Stuttgart region. Nowhere else have so many theatre and opera visits been recorded in recent years.
